Hudson a pleasant surprise

Diamondbacks second baseman Orlando Hudson has been nothing but good news for Arizona (and fantasy owners) this season.

Hudson has reached base via hit or walk in all 30 games this season. He’s batting third in the Diamondbacks lineup, which makes him especially intriguing for fantasy purposes.

He has hit four home runs, swiped two bags and has a batting average over .350 and an OBP over .400. He also has an impressive 25 RBIs, which for what it’s worth, means he’s on pace for over 130.

He hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning, which may actually have been miscalled. Here’s the photo (especially big for effect):

It appears Endy Chavez came up with the ball, but a fan knocked it into the seats. I’m sure the Mets would have put up more of a fight if they hadn’t won the game anyway.

Just, out.

Ex-Angels in the Outfield

The White Sox lost their fifth-straight game Friday night and fell to 12-14 on the season.

Despite a quality start from Jose Contreras(even though he committed a costly error), the anemic offense was unable to score more than one run.

Entering Friday’s game, the Sox were third in the AL in runs allowed, but dead last in runs scored. Friday’s 5-1 loss didn’t help either of those stats.

The White Sox have a team offense of .221/.309/.377.

They remain 4.5 games out of first and in fourth place in the AL Central.

Just, out.

Troubling news on Hancock

2:43 pm —

It was speculated on for a week, but it was confirmed today that Cardinals reliever Josh Hancock had a blood alcohol content of 0.157, nearly twice Missouri’s legal limit of .08, when he crashed into a tow truck.

The Associated Press is also reporting that Hancock was talking on his cell phone at the time of the crash, and police found 8.55 grams of marijuana in his SUV. Toxicology results are still pending.

I can’t help but think about the DUI Tony La Russa was cited with 10 days before the season began. Everyone turned a blind eye then. It’s only incidents like Hancock’s we remember. It may be inconsiderate for me to reflect on whether or not this accident could have been avoided if previous DUI citations had been more newsworthy, but that’s how I feel. If we want to teach people lessons about how to act appropriately, we have to make sure their bosses are acting appropriately first.

UPDATE: The Cardinals have since banned alcohol in their clubhouse. I wouldn’t be surprised to see others follow suit soon.
