Just not in the Cards

9:28 pm —

The Cardinals lost 13-0 and found out their ace, Chris Carpenter, may not start again until August.

The unofficial results are in: The Cardinals are out of playoff contention. We’re just waiting on the stewards to finish reviewing the photo.

Albert Pujols had his his streak snapped, but it hadn’t done much good anyway. Nobody else is hitting, and they don’t have enough depth in the rotation or bullpen to win a division.

The loss dropped St. Louis to 11-17 on the year, eight games behind the mighty Brewers. So far, the division is shaping out just how I thought it would.

Just, out.

Fun with random numbers

9:59 am —

I randomly plugged in hits to Baseball-Reference’s event finder and I was surprised by the output.

The Mets are leading the league with 287 hits. The Cardinals are second to last with 221 and the White Sox are dead last with 186. Talk about a distant last place.

The Sox and Cardinals are also both in the bottom five of total at bats. The Cards are 27th with 908 ABs and the Sox are 29th with 848. I think there may be a connection to the lack of hits…

But, in ultimate White Sox fashion, the team is second in home runs in the American League despite scoring the fewest total runs.

Overall, the White Sox are in the bottom three of the following categories: at bats, hits, runs, doubles, triples, strikeouts, batting average, on base percentage, slugging percentage and stolen bases.

They are in the top three in the following categories: Home runs, walks (offense), hits allowed, runs given up, complete games, and walks allowed.

Interesting.

The Cubs are all over the road. For example, they are first in doubles, eighth in home runs, and 13th in walks. They are second in hits allowed and runs allowed, though. Seems that staff is holding up, so far.

The Cardinals are in the bottom four of any offensive category I have named so far. How telling.

Just, out.
