They call me Mister Masset
Another day, another…not bullpen collapse?
The Sox fended off the Cubs sweep of the Crosstown Classic series by putting up 10 runs Sunday and winning 10-6.
There are two big stories following the game:
First, the potential arrival of Nick Masset is a viable starting option. Masset looked good in 5+ innings of work, allowing three walks, three hits, and two earned runs.
It’s funny, I tried to find a picture of Masset on the AP wire, but all they had were photos of Justin Morneau’s game-ending three run home run from a few weeks ago. Moments like that had pretty much summed up Masset’s season until now.
But he pitched admirably on Sunday, and hopefully the awakened bats are a sign of things to come.
Now, for the other side of town:
On my drive back to Champaign after the game, I listened to 670 The Score, who had some audio of Cubs closer Ryan Dempster saying he would be re-entering the role of a starter for the Cubs.
When their reporter on the scene, David Schuster, spoke to Lou Piniella, he denied this to be true.
It sounds like Carlos Marmol would take over the job of closer, should the rumor be legitimate.
When a decision is official, I’ll talk on this more.
Just, out.
