Your thoughts on the Student Trustee election

12:25 am —

Faced with my disappointing Unofficial thread, I think it’s time to open the floor for discussion about the candidates for student Trustee.

I attended the debate and unfortunately, it was mostly student government types in the crowd who had their own favorite candidates.

Love one of the candidates? Hate one of them? Have no idea who they are? Post what you think about what I predict will be one of most exciting student races in years.

You can look for The Daily Illini’s candidate endorsement this Tuesday (the first day of voting).

Chime Asonye

Mike Cashman

Katie Dunne

Paul Schmitt

  1. Write in the Chief Says:

Schmitt knew the chief was going to be retired several days before it was announced, and did nothing but plan for his campaign. He was the VP of students for the chief, it was retired on his watch, and now he’s asking us to support him because he claims he will save the chief.

    We just can’t trust him.

    SCHMITT:
    No Unofficial for you
    No Booze for you
    No Sex for you
If he cant have fun, no one can.

  2. Vote Chime!! Says:

Clearly, Chime Asonye is the only choice. He cares for the campus community as a whole, is already a large participant on many campus organizations (including previous experience in student government), and he’s just the kind of guy you can take home to your Mum. I’m voting for Chime (pronounced like [Chee-may]), and so should you. Do it for the campus!

  3. Chime Speak Says:

My only problem with Chime is that no one who spends 5 minutes talking to him still thinks he is credible, certainly not serious professionals who sit on the board of trustees. Also, he did a really poor job in student government - by all accounts he was the least effective committee chair.

  4. Jessica Says:

I attended the trustee debate and all five candidates pretty much took the same positions. That’s why I am voting for the cutest guy, Mike Cashman.

  5. Pradeep Singanallur Says:

Hi guys. Whatever reasons you have for voting, make sure they are good ones. I feel I can speak for the other candidates as well as myself when I say that we all sincerely care about the issues in this school (which is more than one that is very talked about) and are not doing this campaign just for the sake of boosting our resumes, and whatnot. Every one of us has passion for this job and will take it seriously. Now I, before I met all the other candidates, might have shared some of the negative sentiment, but now that I have met them all in person, I know that any one of us would be terrific for this job and that this year, more so than any other year will mark changes for the university, that we as students want to see.

So please vote tomorrow and Wednesday and show that the students care to have a voice in their leaders. How amazing would it be if 20,000+ students voted this year? Wouldn’t that show the Board of Trustees that the students they govern actually care about the decisions they make? This also holds for Student Senate, please vote for your leaders in the colleges.

This has been your public service announcement. Thank you and good day!

  6. John Says:

I think that all of the writing on the quad is unacceptable. It is no different than graffiti. I do not think it should be allowed and person who do, should be removed from ballot. I also think you people who put your “pretty little faces” on the posters are horrible! How conceited for you to go around posting your senior picture, hoping everyone will think you are cute and vote for you. College should not be a popularity contest, and I would imagine that more than half of you idiots running are just doing this for a resume builder, and not for true love of the school and issue’s.
I hope that all of this crap on the sidewalks wash away when this is over. I would hate to see your name’s on the quad for the next year.
