Youtube of Daily Show skit on Chief Illiniwek
The Daily Illini has learned that The Daily Show will broadcast a segment that was filmed at the University of Illinois last week.
The segment deals with the Chief Illiniwek controversey and features Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi along with several U of I students.
The Daily Illini was lucky enough to send a photographer to It’s Brothers! where part of the segment was filmed. The bar will be holding a special viewing session tonight. You can view photos from the shoot here.
Once the segment airs, I will post the Comedy Central Motherload clip if it becomes available. Otherwise, get your YouTube on. If you’ve got a reaction to the show, send your thoughts to opinions@dailyillini.com and I will post them up here if I can’t fit them in the two print issues I have left.
Update: Comedy Central has the video up. Yes, that’s former DI columnist Jack McMillan.
Update #2: Motherload is notoriously difficult to work with. But luckily, it got posted on Youtube today. It will probably get taken down soon due to ongoing disagreements between Viacom (Comedy Central’s parent company) and Google (which bought YouTube this year) If you want to grab it before it’s gone, there are ways. Google is your friend.
Update #3: Youtube is now down and motherload still won’t embed properly, so here’s the direct link.

I fail to see the relationship between faking a drunk at a local bar and the situation of Chief Illiniwek. I’m not sure how this could pass as “comedy”. It was made very clear by the U of I Board of Trustees and their actions over the last 30 years that the Chief was recently “dropped” for financial reasons, that their “loyalty” is now to the dollars of the NCAA. If it was anything else, the Chief would have been removed as representative of the U of I decades ago. And, yes, I do know — I was there 30 years ago, and there was appropriate discussion going back at least that far, discussion unchanged from the most recent…except for the influence of the NCAA dollars. The recent actions of the U of I Board of Trustees were disgusting, and they should all, as a group, be replaced, for such mercenary attitudes and action. It is repulsive that they should stoop so low. The U of I can have their NCAA dollars, but have mine no more.
So, now that I think about it, if you were instead running a parody of a Board of Trustee member drunk at a local bar….nah, not worth it…and still not funny.

How many times over the past 30 years has the NCAA imposed sanctions against the university for systemic recruiting violations. Is this an effort by the NCAA to show the trustees a lesson about morality and money ? The chief keeps the sports program under the microscope. Is academics a factor in the scrutiny of Uof I. ? I can’t tell where the alumni’s priorities exist.

I’m getting the impression that the skit will be a mockery of the Illiniwek tradition from their perspective of what it amounts to.
