Is that all you got Mother Nature??

4:24 am —

If that’s what a 5.4 earthquake feels like, color me underwhelmed.

Maybe I’m just weird but that didn’t really strike fear into my heart.

You know, obviously, HOORAY WE SURVIVED!!!!

But I’m just gonna go back to bed.

What did everyone else think?

Turning negatives into positives

10:12 pm —

Kiyoshi Martinez, former editor in chief of the Daily Illini, got famous today for his founding of angryjournalist.com. The web site is home to over 2000 anonymous gripes from people in the journalism business. A wire piece written today was picked up on Drudge as a supplement to news that CBS will be making cuts to its newsroom staff.

If you’re interested in the inner-workings of a (not so?) modern newsroom, AJ is a good place to start. It’s kind of depressing reading so those with weak stomachs (read: journ majors) beware.

However, despite the growing pains modern journalism is going through, other occupations could use a site like this too. Angryteacher.com? Angrypolitician.com? Angrycop.com? Angryparent.com? Angrystudent.com?

U of I student puts one over on Sun-Times

10:34 pm —

Katie Hamilton, a U of I student who’s majoring in public policy is now the face of one of the great newspaper battles of recent memory. She’s been interning at the Chicago Tribune and before that she did press work for the Illinois Student Senate. Bravo!

Full disclosure: I’m a Cardinals fan so I’m not as invested in the Cubs as most people in this area are but even I think selling Wrigley is a bad idea.

Unofficial St. PRACTICE Day?

11:36 am —

A well-connected source informs me that Scott Cochrane, owner of many campus bars and the inventor of Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day is declaring today, the Friday before Unofficial to be “Unofficial St. Practice Day.”

The event itself has grown to be a major headache with the University and local governments since the event draws thousands to the CU for what some call the biggest party in the Big-10. This year, Cochrane is trying to extend the event to two days, starting early Friday Feb. 29 and ending Saturday night Mar.1.

But this source informs me that signs in Firehaus may indicate that he’s trying to get the event to grow even bigger with a warmup of sorts.

Of course, The Daily Illini will have continuing coverage next week as the masses descend for what may be the wildest Unofficial yet.

Drudge does it again

8:44 pm —

The Wisconsin primary was just called for Sen. Barack Obama. But one thing I noticed made me chuckle. Observe.

Drudge1

The very next refresh brought not a correction to the typo in the headline but what really matters, the exit poll breakdowns.

Drudge2

Stay tuned.

Scientology protest in Hollywood

3:56 pm —

A friend of mine traveled from Long Beach to Hollywood on Sunday to be a part of the worldwide Scientology protest put on by members of “Anonymous,” a loose organization of online activists (not hackers or terrorists as some would lead you to believe…alright, some of them are hackers, but not all).

Anyway, below is one of the dozens of videos that were made on Sunday. You can see my friend at 0:36, holding up the Xenu.net sign. The Guy Fawkes mask suits him.

Prediction: Edwards endorses Obama soon

2:14 am —

I partially buy into the kingmaker argument. Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards waiting until the democratic convention in August to support Clinton or Obama, and thus, determining the nomination.

But what I don’t buy into is that he’s going to wait until August. After an essential split of the Super Tuesday states, the upcoming contests favor Obama since they’re caucuses (cauci?)  6 days from now is Chesapeake Tuesday with Virginia, Maryland and D.C. up for grabs. I think the beltway goes for Obama. So where does that leave Clinton?

Wisconsin on Feb. 19. and then Ohio and Texas on Mar. 4th. Obama’s Chicago strength will be felt in Wisconsin and Hillary has been polling strongly in Ohio. Texas is a wild card but I would be willing to bet there would be a stronger anti-Hillary sentiment among state democrats in one of redder states in the union.

But Ohio, which has a lot of blue-collar workers, will be huge, HUGE for Clinton. But what better state can one of the most pro-union politicians in this country be a factor? I think Edwards endorses Obama before Ohio and blunts whatever victory Clinton has there.

I don’t think he CAN wait for the convention to be kingmaker, he’s got to make his move now.

Also, another senator likely to be a factor in the coming weeks is Wisconsin’s Russ Feingold. Obama has Wis. Gov. Jim Doyle backing him already. Feingold is a darling of the left, and he may be too far left to actually endorse Hillary Clinton. Add in strength in neighboring Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri and Obama’s chances look extremely good.

I said it earlier before Iowa and New Hampshire, I think Obama and McCain will be the nominees. McCain is going to come true. I think Clinton is in serious trouble and Edwards and possibly Feingold will put Obama over the top within the next few weeks.

Mitt Romney tries to get funky

3:09 pm —

A ha. Ahahahahahaha.
