Confirmed: Smith Left Accident Scene

6:57 pm —

Kent Brown, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations at the University of Illinois, confirmed early rumors that sophomore Illinois baskeball player Jamar Smith, who was involved in an accident late Monday night, left the scene of the crash and drove toward his apartment in Savoy. Smith, who was later treated for a concussion, was injured along with freshman teammate Brian Carlwell. Carlwell remains in serious condition at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Smith was charged with inproper lane usage after his vehicle skidded off road and hit a tree. Brown has said he cannot comment as to whether alcohol was or wasn’t involved.

Carlwell was in the car with Smith when he left the scene.

It’s called he had a concussion. Proper judgment is not present during that time. Confusion and disorientation are linked in most cases. Don’t go and try making your little reply to the news message something huge. He seeked the medical attention which was needed and that is all that matters.

We were not trying to imply anything more than the facts. It was rumored earlier in the day that Jamar Smith had left the scene of the crash WITHOUT Carlwell. That was false. However, he did leave the scene, and it was important enough to be confirmed by the A.D.’s office, so obviously it was an issue that needed to be addressed by The Daily Illini. Nothing extraneous was implied by the update. The Daily Illini and its Sports Desk in no way has confirmed, assumed or implied that alcohol was involved in the incident. As far as we are concerned, at this point, Jamar Smith’s accident was a result of the weather conditions. Until we are told otherwise by the police and/or the A.D.’s office, no conclusion will be made that alcohol was in any way involved.
